Paul
Gourley -- “Our Youth Are Our Future”
Firearm
Instruction: A certified
NRA Instructor, Paul Gourley, uses all of
the booklets and materials
Provided
by the NRA to instruct more than three hundred
students per year on basic firearm safety,
including: rifle, shotgun, pistol, home
firearm safety and whitetail deer Hunting.,
He also finds the complimentary new 12-minute
video provided by USP Bore Paste to be an
invaluable training tool: “What I
do is stop the film at the end of each major
segment of this step-by-step presentation
so that the students can then practice what
they’ve learned about cleaning on
actual firearms!” Using a fully-equipped
classroom right on the premises of his classroom
near Baltimore, MD, Paul averages around
20 to 50 youth per Maryland Department of
Natural Resources classes. As well as giving
personalized small class instruction in
his own classroom. Live fire is conducted
at the range of the Associated Gun Clubs
of Baltimore Md. Inc.
Personal
Profile: Born and bred in
Elkins Park, just outside of Philadelphia,
PA, Paul is a graduate of Clark University
in western Massachusetts where he majored
in sociology. From there, Paul served in
the U.S. Air Force and then transferred
into the U.S. Coast Guard where he rose
to the rank of Commander; and for many years
ran search and rescue missions from his
headquarters in, Baltimore Maryland. A hunter
since childhood, Paul now has three grown
children and five grandchildren all of whom
he taught and still takes hunting -- “And
they love it!” He also has served
for many years as an assistant scout master
and gun club youth trainer.
Hunting/Shooting
Preferences: “I love
my high-powered rifles -- especially the
Browning 30-06 and my 300 caliber Win Mag.
My favorite hunting grounds are in the upper
peninsula of Michigan as well as Pennsylvania
and West Virginia where we bag a lot of
huge whitetail deer. I also go to Africa
at least once a year, where I’ve shot
everything but elephant and giraffe. Most
beautiful trophies are the Eland and the
Kudu. Don’t shoot anything I don’t
eat -- unless I’m getting rid of varmints
-- and that meat goes to the needy. I’ve
seen ground hogs absolutely destroy a soybean
field to the point where it looked like
it was burned out!”
Favorite
Outdoor Writer: “My
favorite outdoor author is a fellow by the
name of Bill Burton, a sports editor who
has written some outstanding feature articles
on fishing and hunting for the Baltimore
Sun. In addition, I’m particularly
fond of two quotations I came across years
ago related to the outdoors: ‘Wandering
establishes the original harmony which once
existed between man and the universe,’
Anatole France; and ‘The rewards of
the journey far outweigh the risks of leaving
the harbor,’ Unknown.
Outstanding
Outdoor Memory: “Best
hunting story would have to be when I was
about 14 years old; and out hunting deer
with pumpkin balls. My buddies and I were
checking out some tracks near a stream when
I heard something moving behind me. When
I swung around I found myself face to waist
with an 8-foot black bear. He looked at
me; I looked at him -- and I guess he was
the most scared because he turned around
and ran away!”
On
Our Hunting Heritage: “Today’s
younger generation is the future of this
country. So I really enjoy teaching them
the enjoyment of wildlife and the great
outdoors -- especially the proper and safe
handling of firearms. I believe it helps
to hone personal skills as well as building
character and a sense of responsibility.
One reason we’re not seeing the numbers
of newcomers we used to is that we’re
taking away a lot of the natural habitats.
There’s not enough room to support
the deer and bear and other wildlife population.
We need to set aside more game-lands and
stop building on the ones we already have.”
On
Firearm Care: “As
an instructor, avid hunter, owner of a private
classroom, as well as teach live fire on
the range of The Associated Gun Club of
Maryland Inc. and member of many other gun
clubs, I have tried just about every firearm
cleaning and maintenance product you could
imagine. When I received the NRA Instructor
Training Materials Kit from USP I tried
the USP Bore Paste to clean two rifles that
I had already thoroughly cleaned with the
stuff I believed was the best for many years.
Then I ran a couple clean patches through
the bore and you wouldn’t believe
how filthy they came out!” Of course
using USP Bore Paste.
